There are more than one hundred varieties of grasshoppers on the prairie.

Every creature has a time of day at which they do their best. Some are early risers, and others do their best work at night. Many animals are at their best at twilight, early in the morning and/or in the late afternoon— dawn and dusk. This type of animal is known as crepuscular. Why are they active only at twilight? For many reasons: some animals see best only in dim light; bright light hurts their eyes. Some live where temperatures get very high during the day; the twilight hours are cooler. Many insects can’t battle the daytime wind; they prefer the calm of dawn and dusk. Other animals simply need to hide from predators and feed in the shadows. And some of their predators are active at twilight, just to take advantage of their prey.
